If your company runs on Google Workspace, you have probably noticed something: most HR tools support Slack and Teams, then stop. Google Chat gets a footnote at best, an email-fallback at worst. That has been a real friction point for the SMBs we work with in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK — many of whom are Workspace-first by default.

Leave Balance now has a native Google Chat integration. Same workflow as our Slack and Teams integrations: apply for leave, approve, and broadcast the day’s roster — without leaving Chat.

What you can do from Google Chat

Apply for leave

Use the slash command in any Space or DM. Pick the leave type, dates, optional note, and submit. The request hits the same approval chain as if you’d applied from the web app.

Approve as a manager

Approval cards appear in the manager’s DM with the bot. Approve, decline, or ask for changes inline. The card updates so the chat history shows the decision and the timestamp.

See who is out today

A daily digest posts to the Spaces you choose — typically #general, #engineering, #ops. Configurable timing, configurable channel list.

Why Google Chat specifically

Two reasons.

One: Google Workspace dominates SMB tech in ANZ and growing markets. Surveys put Workspace adoption among Australian SMBs above 60% in some segments. For those teams, Slack is overkill, Teams is a Microsoft 365 stack they don’t use, and email is the de facto “chat.” A Google Chat integration meets them where they already are.

Two: most leave tools skip it. Look at any HR-software comparison page and Google Chat is conspicuously missing or marked “via Zapier.” Building it natively is a small but real gap we wanted to close for our Workspace customers.

What’s not different vs Slack and Teams

We deliberately kept the user experience identical across all three platforms:

CapabilitySlackTeamsGoogle Chat
Slash command to apply
Approval cards for managers
Daily roster digest
Balance lookup command
Cancellation from chat

If your company uses two of the three (a common pattern when teams merge or migrate), the integrations don’t conflict — they just stay in sync with the same backing data.

Setting it up

  1. Settings → Integrations → Google Chat.
  2. Authorise the bot for your Workspace domain.
  3. Add the bot to the Spaces where you want digests.
  4. Employees start with /leave immediately.

If your IT admin restricts third-party Workspace apps, they’ll need to allow the Leave Balance bot in the Workspace admin console first. We documented that step inside the integration screen.

The bigger point

Choosing an HR tool used to mean choosing a chat platform. If your tool only supported Slack, you either lived with email notifications or migrated chat platforms. That trade-off has aged badly. Modern teams are platform-agnostic — and so should the tools that surface inside them.

Leave Balance now works the same way regardless of where your team chats. Pick the integration that matches your stack and forget about it.
