Methodology

What each country calculation does

AU

Same pay as taking leave

Unused annual leave is valued at the applicable leave rate. Add loading only where it would have applied to leave taken.

NZ

Entitled leave plus part-year pay

Enter entitled leave at the higher applicable rate, then the tool adds 8% of post-anniversary gross earnings less relevant holiday pay already paid.

UK

Untaken holiday at leaving rate

Multiply unused holiday hours by the applicable holiday pay rate. Variable-pay workers may require a statutory reference-period calculation first.

Official sources: Fair Work Ombudsman, Employment New Zealand final pay, and GOV.UK leaving a job guidance. This estimate excludes tax, notice, redundancy, public holidays, alternative holidays, and jurisdiction-specific long service leave.

01

What does the leave payout calculator include?

It estimates gross payment for the unused leave hours and applicable holiday pay rate you enter. For Australia it can add a user-specified leave loading; for New Zealand it can add the statutory 8% calculation for the part-year since the latest anniversary.

02

Must unused annual leave be paid when employment ends in Australia?

Yes. The Fair Work Ombudsman says unused accumulated annual leave must be paid when employment ends at the same amount the employee would have received if the leave were taken, including applicable loading or other payments.

03

How does final holiday pay work in New Zealand?

Remaining entitled annual holidays are paid at the greater of ordinary weekly pay or average weekly earnings. A further 8% calculation generally applies to gross earnings since the last anniversary, less relevant holiday pay already paid.

04

Can UK statutory leave be paid instead of taken?

Payment in lieu of statutory holiday is generally allowed when the worker leaves the job. Employers must pay untaken statutory leave, including after dismissal for gross misconduct.
