Methodology

How the estimate works

1

Set the annual weeks

The NES minimum is four ordinary weeks. The fifth week is used only when you select an eligible award- or agreement-defined shiftworker.

2

Convert to hours and days

Ordinary weekly hours or days are multiplied by four or five, then apportioned by completed months for this planning estimate.

3

Show a loading scenario

The loading result is accrued hours × base hourly rate × 17.5%. Check whether loading or a higher award payment actually applies.

01

How much annual leave do Australian employees receive?

Under the National Employment Standards, full-time and part-time employees receive four weeks of paid annual leave for each year of service, based on ordinary hours. Casual employees do not receive paid annual leave.

02

Do all shiftworkers receive five weeks?

No. The extra week applies only where the relevant award or enterprise agreement contains shiftwork provisions and defines the employee as a shiftworker entitled to the NES additional week. Check the applicable instrument before selecting shiftworker.

03

Does annual leave accrue from day one?

Yes. Annual leave accumulates progressively from the first day of employment according to ordinary hours and unused leave carries over from year to year.

04

Is 17.5% leave loading automatic?

No. Leave loading depends on the applicable award, enterprise agreement, registered agreement, or employment contract. The calculator shows 17.5% as a common scenario, not a universal entitlement.
