Talk to our team01How much is Statutory Maternity Pay in 2026/27?
The first six weeks are paid at 90% of average weekly earnings. The next 33 weeks are paid at £194.32 or 90% of average weekly earnings, whichever is lower.
02What is the SMP earnings threshold?
For 2026/27, average weekly earnings must be at least £129 in the relevant period, alongside the employment, notice, and evidence conditions.
03How long is SMP paid?
SMP can be paid for up to 39 weeks. Statutory maternity leave can last up to 52 weeks, so the pay period and leave period are not the same.
04What if an employee does not qualify for SMP?
The employer should provide form SMP1. The employee may be able to claim Maternity Allowance from the government, depending on their circumstances.
05Will the standard rate change during maternity pay?
Statutory rates are normally uprated each tax year. A maternity pay period that crosses the annual rate-change date may need more than one standard rate, so check payroll guidance for the actual payment weeks.
