Take 80% of average weekly earnings and compare it with £123.25. Use the lower amount.
Pay from day one
For a new absence from 6 April 2026, SSP begins on the first full qualifying day. The previous three waiting days no longer apply.
Apply the 28-week limit
Divide the weekly rate by qualifying days and cap payment at the remaining part of the 28-week maximum.

For absences under the rules from 6 April 2026, weekly SSP is 80% of average weekly earnings or £123.25, whichever is lower.
02Are there still three waiting days for SSP?
No for a new sickness absence starting on or after 6 April 2026. SSP is payable from the first full qualifying day of sickness. Transitional rules can apply to an absence that started earlier.
03Is there a minimum earnings threshold for SSP?
The lower earnings limit was removed from 6 April 2026. Eligible employees can receive SSP regardless of earnings, but the payment is capped at 80% of average weekly earnings.
04How long can SSP be paid?
SSP is normally payable for up to 28 weeks. Linked sickness periods and earlier SSP can reduce what remains.
05Does company sick pay change this result?
An employer can provide contractual sick pay above SSP. Check the employment contract and payroll policy to see whether SSP is included within or paid alongside company sick pay.
