Full-time equivalent converts workforce hours into the number of people those hours would represent if everyone worked the organisation's standard full-time schedule. It is a capacity measure, not a headcount.
02What is the basic FTE formula?
FTE equals total workforce hours for a period divided by the full-time hours for the same period. This calculator uses weekly hours: full-time employees plus the part-time group’s average hours divided by the standard week.
03Is one part-time employee always 0.5 FTE?
No. A part-time employee is 0.5 FTE only when their hours are exactly half of the organisation's full-time standard. Someone working 24 hours against a 40-hour standard is 0.6 FTE.
04Should overtime be included?
It depends on the reporting purpose. Many workforce-planning definitions use regular or contracted hours and exclude overtime. Use a consistent method, document it, and follow any specific statutory, grant, accounting, or internal reporting definition that applies.
